FAQ's

1. How much is Dinner Money?

Presently the daily cost is £2.10, this is paid via Parent Pay. The quickest way to pay is online alternatively you may pay at a PP point at a local shop. Please contact the school office with a letter and a personalised bar code.

2. What time does school start?

We start school at 8.45am, gates open 8.30am and children may enter the school from this time. The gate in Stratton Drive is closed at 8:45am, if you arrive after this you should report to the School Office and your child will be marked in as late. We would encourage children to be in the school playground from 8.30am to avoid lateness and the stresses this can bring.

4. How do I make an application for a school place?

All in-year applications are processed by the Admissions Team at Barking & Dagenham Local Authority. The Borough hold the waiting list for all schools and will allocate school places as and when they become available. For further information please click here.

For Year 3 places, if your child attends Manor Infant School you will automatically receive an offer of a place at the Junior School, therefore there is no need to re-apply unless you were moving to an alternative school.

5. What should I do if my child is bullied?

Advise your child to speak to an adult in the school. This can be any member of staff that they feel comfortable with. You may also wish to support your child by talking to the teacher with your child. We would encourage that they report any incident to the class teacher as they can observe behaviour during lessons and advise lunchtime staff as necessary. We take accusations of bullying very seriously and any incidents are dealt with appropriately and with speed. If you are concerned about your child please speak to the class teacher and never approach a child or the parent.

6. Can I park at the school?

We do not have car parking facilities on site. Please be aware that there is a School Street closure on Stratton Drive from 8:00 - 9:15 am and 2:45 - 4:00 pm during term time. No cars are allowed to use this road during these times apart from disabled badge holders and residents. We ask parents to 'park and stride' to avoid congestion. If you are parking in the local area please do so legally and with due consideration for our neighbours.

7. Can my child cycle to school?

Yes, your child can cycle to school. If you wish your child to cycle on their own we would ask that you signed our “Cycle Agreement”, this clarifies safety expectations and security. A secure cycle shed is provided on site.

8. Can my child walk to school alone?

Year 5 and 6 children may walk to and from school alone, please send in a permission letter from the parent or carer with parental responsibility.

If you wish an older child to walk a Year 3 or 4 child to school alone we must receive a permission letter from the parent with parental responsibility. 

9. What should I put in my child’s packed lunch?

We encourage healthy eating and expect parents to choose healthily when creating a packed lunch.

An example of a healthy packed lunch:

• A sandwich
• No crisps except baked snacks eg. Baked crisps, cheddars.
• Yoghurt and a piece of fruit.
• Bottle of water or juice.
• No sweets, fizzy drinks, nuts or chocolate

10. What do I do if my child has lost a piece of clothing?

Parents must either sew a name label into all clothing or write the child’s name in indelible ink. If an item goes missing your child should look around the school and in the lost property box. We will do our utmost to find lost items but we are unable to provide a replacement.

11. Where will my child go when they finish Manor Junior School in Year 6?

We offer varied support in the transition from primary to secondary school. This process includes parents receiving leaflets from the local authority as well as the offer to attend meetings run by Barking and Dagenham. Parents are encouraged to visit Open Evenings at secondary schools to help them in the decision process. All details for Open Evenings can be obtained from individual school websites or the One Stop Shop in Barking. All admission applications for secondary transfer must be completed online by the end of October. You will be notified by the local authority in March of the following year. Due to our geographical location, our pupils go on to various secondary schools across Barking and Dagenham, however, many also take the 11+ to access selective education in neighbouring authorities.

12. Can my child bring toys in to school?

No, we normally discourage toys or collectables (e.g. football cards) being brought to school, unless the class teacher has specifically requested that they do. Please always check with the class teacher.

13. How do I receive communications from the school?

In the first instance, please check our school website for any information. The school’s monthly newsletter is published on the first of every month and is sent to you via email and is then put on the website.

The school uses Parentmail to communicate with you about trips, events, parent consultations, school closures etc.

14. What is the best time to talk to the teacher if I have a question?

We would discourage parents from trying to talk to a teacher in the morning as they are busy preparing for the school day. We would advise you to speak to the teacher at the end of the school day after all the children have been dismissed, please avoid Wednesdays when the staff have meetings directly after school. We can also arrange appointments in the school office for parents to see the class teacher or another member of staff.

15. Is there before and after school provision?

At Manor Junior School we offer a variety of clubs. These may run before school from 8am (not including breakfast) or after school from 3.30 -4.30pm. We are constantly reviewing our club provision and you will be notified in the first week of the new term of any new opportunities, so that you may apply.

16. How can parents / corers get involved?

We encourage parents to get involved in various ways from attending trips, individual reading to becoming a school governor.

If you are interested in the governance of the school, please call the school office to make an appointment with the Head Teacher.

If you work for a company that is able to sponsor or donate to fundraising in the school please email office@manor-j.bardaglea.org.uk subject: fundraising.

Safeguarding our children is our number one priority. If you are asked to help or you would like to help you will be asked to complete an induction process.

17. How do I go about arranging a placement at Manor Junior School?

If you are studying and looking for a placement or work experience please email the school office office@manor-j.bardaglea.org.uk subject: placement. State your name, age, type of placement / experience, duration and times of placement and contact details; please also write a paragraph explaining why you wish to come to Manor Junior School.
