Safeguarding

Safeguarding

Manor Junior School fully recognises its responsibilities for safeguarding and child protection. Safeguarding incidents could happen at home, outside the home, online and in school. Our well-trained staff are alert to possible concerns being raised in school. All staff and visitors may raise concerns if they believe there is a risk of immediate or serious harm to the child. We have a duty of care to all our pupils and pupil safety is always our top priority.

If you or your child have any concerns, please speak to a member of our safeguarding team who have the most updated training to support children and families.

School Safeguarding Software for Reporting Concerns: CPOMS

Safeguarding our children is paramount. Securely logging, tracking and dealing with data is vital in an educational setting. To ensure the safety and welfare of our pupils, staff are trained to log concerns on the CPOMs platform.

CPOMS is a revolutionary software application for monitoring child protection, safeguarding and welfare issues. Working alongside a school’s existing safeguarding processes, CPOMS is an intuitive system to help with the management of child protection, behavioural issues, bullying and domestic issues. CPOMS provides us with a permission levelled, secure and easy to use contact database allowing for quick and simple logging of data, a referral system, links to external resources, evidence and reports for external bodies.

Specific Safeguarding and Wellbeing Support at MJS:

Learning Mentor

Our learning mentor works with children in a group or one-to-one basis. They provide support, motivation and guidance to help pupils overcome obstacles to their learning. These could include learning difficulties, family issues, mental health problems, bereavement, lack of confidence or friendship issues.

Social, Emotional and Mental Health Difficulties (SEMH)  intervention

The SEMH interventions are usually structured and led by LSAs with the SENDCO overseeing the provision. They provide children with severe difficulties in managing their emotions and behaviour with strategies and support.

Both the learning mentor and SEMH interventions duties include:

  • actively listening to pupils’ concerns
  • discussing ways and forming plans to address these concerns
  • providing support, advice and guidance tailored to each pupil’s situation
  • liaising with schools, teachers, social workers and educational psychologists and making referrals if needed
  • making home visits or speaking with parents/carers about strategies to deal with each child’s situation

Zones of Regulation

The Zones of Regulation help to organise feelings, states of alertness, and energy levels into four coloured Zones – Blue, Green, Yellow, and Red. The simple, common language and visual structure of The Zones of Regulation helps make the complex skill of regulation more concrete for learners and those who support them. We use the Zones to co-regulate and teach pupils how to learn to regulate their Zones so that they can meet goals and task demands. The Zones also support overall well-being.  In our classrooms we use these universal practices to proactively teach and support pupils in their emotional growth.

Lego Therapy

This intervention is used to develop communication skills, confidence, and social and emotional wellbeing through collaborative LEGO play. Within a LEGO Therapy session children will have fun, make friends and over time develop a sense of community and belonging.

Nurture UK

Nurture UK helps schools to improve behaviour, attendance and attainment, and reduce exclusions, by supporting staff to improve children and young people’s wellbeing. It develops effective support for children and young people’s wellbeing, including preventing exclusions, and supporting positive engagement with school and learning.

Tender

Tender is a nationwide charity harnessing the power of drama and the arts to educate children, young people and adults about healthy relationships. Tender promotes respect and equality with the pursuit of preventing domestic abuse and sexual violence.

Barking and Dagenham Mental Health Support Team (BD MHST)

The BD MHST offers one-to-one support directly to parent/carers whose children may be experiencing mild to moderate difficulties with their behaviour and/or worries.

They also provide children with practical strategies on a particular topic, for example, building self-esteem and understanding my emotions.

The Drama Centre: London Academy of Music & Dramatic Art (LAMDA)

LAMDA Speech & Drama classes are drama lessons leading to exams set by the London Academy of Music & Dramatic Art. These exams are designed to develop the skills necessary to communicate dramatic text to an audience. Learners who prepare themselves appropriately will develop interpretative skills, technical skills and knowledge of the performance process. It is used here to help pupils grow in vocal and physical confidence, developing self-expression, and teaches them to work creatively and sympathetically with others.

London Grid for Learning (LGfL)

We use LGfL resources to filter our web provision. We have systems in place to actively manage our filtering system so that we can provide a safe environment for pupils to learn.   We know that no filtering system can be 100% effective, we understand the coverage of our filtering system, and its limitations and mitigate accordingly to minimise harm and meet our statutory requirements in Keeping children safe in education (KCSIE) and the Prevent duty. Our effective filtering system does block internet access to harmful sites and inappropriate content. It does not unreasonably impact teaching and learning or school administration nor restrict children from learning how to assess and manage risk themselves.

Irock

Irock gives pupils the opportunity to be in their very own rock and pop band! Pupils develop not only musical skills but also life skills, confidence and well-being that provide a solid foundation for later life. Lessons not only increase children's interest in music, they can help develop invaluable life skills such as self-confidence, creativity and team work which in turn help their overall academic success.

NSPCC

The NSPCC ‘Speak out Stay safe’ programme covers topics like bullying and abuse - without using any scary words or adult language.

Pupils learn about the different types of abuse in a child-friendly and age appropriate way, so they can get help if or when they need it. The NSPCC help them identify safe adults they can talk to if they're ever worried about themselves or a friend. And they learn about Childline, and how it can support them.
